“Renewables vs. Fossil Fuels - Who Wins and Why?"
November 22nd, 2016
Today’s debate comes as we approach a defining moment in the history of energy in Mexico. Following the sweeping energy reform and new legislation, Mexico has embarked on bids for major contracts in both the upstream exploration & production sector, pipeline transportation, and power generation. New markets are opening; new sources of finance are being sought; the legal framework is changing.
Both renewables and fossil fuels offer energy security, the ability to have access to reliable low cost energy supplies, creating a choice of energy products at competitive prices upon which to build the economy, create jobs and increase incomes. Both can have a significant multiplier effect on the economy and economic growth.
Governments around the world are making commitments to significantly reduce carbon emissions. This brings new opportunities for renewables not only wind and solar, but also geothermal, hydro, tidal power and biofuels. At the same time, natural gas offers a low-carbon bridge to the future, and technologies such as carbon sequestration and clean coal are reinventing fossil fuels.
So who wins & why? What energy sources will power Mexico’s energy future? Which industries will prosper from renewables? Who will invest in geothermal, wind & solar? Are fossil fuels the mainstay of Mexico’s energy future, as well as its energy imports and exports? Are subsidies of certain forms of energy viable? Which companies will be successful? Who are the winners in the short term? And the long term?
