ANZMEX Publishes Statement of Principles on Women’s Leadership, Board Effectiveness and Corporate Governance

ANZMEX has published its Statement of Principles on Women’s Leadership, Board Effectiveness and Corporate Governance: seven voluntary principles for members across Australia, New Zealand and Mexico. The Statement was authored by ANZMEX Board Director Vanessa Zárate Castillo and formally approved by the ANZMEX Board of Directors.

The Statement treats women’s leadership as a fundamental dimension of good corporate governance and board effectiveness. Organisations that develop female talent strengthen their leadership pipeline, improve succession planning and make better long-term decisions. Boards benefit from a wider range of expertise, particularly through qualified women serving as independent directors.

“Women’s leadership goes beyond representation. It is about recognising and developing talent, strengthening organisations and improving the quality of leadership and decision-making. With these principles, we want to encourage businesses to make women’s leadership an integral part of their long-term strategy and corporate governance,” said Vanessa Zárate Castillo.

The seven principles

  1. Equal Opportunity
  2. Leadership Development
  3. Fair and Transparent Career Progression
  4. Equal Pay for Equal Work
  5. Board Composition and Effectiveness
  6. Inclusive and Respectful Workplaces
  7. Continuous Improvement

The principles are voluntary guidance, not prescriptive standards. Each organisation decides how to apply them according to its size, sector and stage of development.

The Statement forms part of ANZMEX’s broader commitment to advancing women’s leadership and effective corporate governance. ANZMEX has also convened a roundtable discussion to encourage dialogue and exchange perspectives on these issues.

The Statement draws on internationally recognised good practices and publicly available research from the OECD, IFC, AICD, IoD New Zealand and others, as acknowledged in the document.
